Ship car to Kauai from anywhere on the mainland

We ship car to Kauai from anywhere on the U.S. mainland. Cars bound for Kauai come off at Nawiliwili Harbor in Lihue, and on the standard route they get there by way of Honolulu. From a California port, our price is $2,700 to $2,900 for a standard car. Plan on 33 to 45 days from sailing to release, because the barge that connects Honolulu to Kauai runs about once a month. We book the sailing and the barge connection, send a truck to your door if you need one, and track your car until it’s released.

Where Kauai shipments go wrong, and how we prevent it

What goes wrong What it costs you What we do
The truck misses the terminal’s receiving window The car misses its ship, and possibly the barge connection after it We don’t dispatch until the sailing is confirmed, then time the pickup to the window
The car is refused at the terminal A missed sailing over fuel, dirt, warning lights or personal items We run the prep checklist with you before the truck is booked
The car is too tall or wide for Oakland Turned away at the gate, or a last-minute reroute We check height and width, counting lifts and racks, before choosing the port
You head to Nawiliwili on the ship’s arrival date A wasted trip, or a flight booked around the wrong day We give you a pickup date only after the car is released
Damage turns up after you leave the lot A claim that’s hard to prove We walk you through the condition report so damage gets noted at the harbor
Your car is worth more than the carrier’s liability Standard carrier liability tops out around $8,000 for an average car, and it isn’t insurance We add declared-value coverage or help you confirm your own policy covers ocean transit

Kauai car shipping FAQ

Yes. Cars that start on Oahu ride a separate inter-island barge to Nawiliwili, with two sailings a week and one day at sea. It costs far less than a mainland shipment: about $450 to $820 one way, port to port, depending on the weight on your registration, plus Hawaii tax. Our inter-island car shipping page has the full rate table and schedule.

Not on the standard route. The Honolulu connection doesn’t take EVs or plug-in hybrids right now. A direct call at Nawiliwili can, when one is scheduled, as long as the battery stays between 20 and 50% charged and the booking is in the registered owner’s name. That sailing adds a $375 EV surcharge. Hybrids that don’t plug in usually ship like a gas car, and we confirm your model when you ask for a quote.

It is when your car is worth comfortably more than the $2,700 to $4,650 it costs to ship, and you can manage six or seven weeks without it. Selling on the mainland and buying on Kauai makes more sense for an older car, or one you’d be replacing soon anyway. Before you decide, price the same model on the island. On a small island, the exact car you want can take a while to find.

Yes. Active-duty service members get $100 off the ocean rate on a Kauai shipment, as long as the service member’s name is on the registration or title. It can’t be combined with other discounts. If you’re moving on PCS orders, our page on military car shipping to Hawaii covers how orders change the shipment, including a second car.

You have 30 days from the car’s arrival. Get Hawaii auto insurance, then take the car and your out-of-state registration to a safety inspection station. It fails on registration only, and that failed certificate goes in person to the County of Kauai motor vehicle office, along with your registration and the shipping receipt we send you showing the arrival date. You’ll leave with an out-of-state permit, or with Hawaii plates if you switch over, which also takes your original title and a G-27 form stamped by the state tax office. Then return to the inspection station for your sticker.

Yes. Port to port from Nawiliwili to a California port runs $2,050 to $2,300 for a standard car, and it connects through Honolulu on the way out too. The paperwork is stricter in this direction. The current title and registration travel with the car, and a financed or leased car needs a notarized lien holder authorization letter from the lender. Our page on shipping a car from Hawaii to the mainland walks through the return trip.
