Shipping a car from Hawaii to California: we handle every island and every leg

Shipping a car from Hawaii to California costs $1,100 to $1,400 port to port from Oahu, and the car is usually ready in California two to four weeks after you hand it over. From Maui, the Big Island or Kauai, budget $1,150 to $2,300 and three to seven weeks, because the car has to make an island connection before it crosses the Pacific. We book the sailing, get your car to the right Hawaii terminal on the right day, and deliver it to a California port lot or your front door.

How to ship a car from Hawaii to California: what we handle at each step

A shipment from Hawaii to California passes through several sets of hands: you or a local hauler, the Hawaii terminal, sometimes a barge, the ocean vessel, the California lot and a mainland truck. We manage every handoff. You only step in at a few points.

  1. We quote and book the sailing.

We confirm your VIN, ownership, dimensions, powertrain and whether the car runs, then reserve ocean space before any truck is dispatched. A car that shows up at a terminal without a booking gets turned away.

Your part is to send the vehicle details, your target date and copies of the title and registration.

  2. We clear the paperwork before drop-off.

Front and back copies of the current title and registration go to the loading port ahead of time. We check that the VIN on your documents matches the booking character for character, and we get the lienholder authorization letter in hand if the car is financed.

Your part is to sign the booking and give us your lender’s contact.

  3. We set the drop-off window or send a hauler.

You get the terminal location and a drop-off date within the seven days before sailing. If you’d rather not drive it in, a local hauler collects the car from your address.

Your part is to bring photo ID, your booking details and every key: ignition, trunk, gas cap and any locked compartments.

  4. The terminal checks the car in.

Staff verify your ID and documents, record the VIN, and walk the car with you for the vehicle condition report. The gate visit takes about 30 minutes, and you leave with a copy of the paperwork.

Your part is to wash the car beforehand and take dated photos of all four sides, the roof, the wheels and any existing damage.

  5. Neighbor-island cars make the connection.

Cars from Maui, the Big Island and Kauai either wait for a direct sailing or ride the barge to Honolulu to join a mainland sailing. We track the car through the connection and tell you right away if a schedule changes.

  6. Your car crosses the Pacific.

The crossing runs on Matson or Pasha Hawaii vessels, depending on which sailing we booked. Standard service is roll-on/roll-off (RORO): the car is driven aboard and secured on an enclosed vehicle deck for the five to eight days at sea. Container shipping, with the car sealed inside a steel box, is the alternative we use for some high-value and non-running vehicles.

  7. We wait for release, not arrival.

Once the ship docks in California, unloading and the move to the pickup lot take another two to five days. Your California truck is already booked, so it moves the day your car is released.

  8. You collect the car, or we deliver it.

At the port lot, you or someone you’ve authorized inspects the car and notes any damage on the paperwork before signing and driving off. For door delivery, you inspect the car with the driver and sign the bill of lading at your address.

Shipping a car from Hawaii to California: documents and vehicle requirements

Paperwork and cleanliness are the two things that stop a car at the Hawaii terminal. We check both before any truck is dispatched.

Documents

  • Current title and current registration, with front and back copies sent to the loading port before drop-off. The registration has to stay valid through the shipping date.
  • Photo ID for whoever drops the car off.
  • A booking agreement signed by the registered owner.
  • A lienholder authorization letter if the car is financed or leased.
  • A notarized authorization letter and a copy of the owner’s ID if anyone else delivers the car to the terminal, including a hauler.
  • A notarized authorization from any co-owner on the title who won’t be at drop-off.
  • A letter from a company officer if the car is registered to a business.

These rules come from Hawaii law, which requires the legal owner’s permission before a Hawaii-registered vehicle leaves the state and requires the terminal to physically confirm the VIN. A car with a perfect engine and a missing lender letter stays on the island.

The mistakes that hold cars up are predictable: a registration that expires before the sailing date, a VIN on the title that’s off by one character from the booking, a lender letter that hasn’t arrived, and a hauler showing up without notarized authority. Ask your lender for the letter the day you book. It’s usually the slowest document to arrive.

Vehicle condition

  • Fuel between 1/8 and 1/4 tank, and never more.
  • Washed inside and out, including the undercarriage, wheel wells, floor mats and truck bed. Cars leaving Hawaii go through a USDA agricultural inspection, and any soil, seeds, plant material or fruit means cleaning and reinspection at your cost. That can also cost you the sailing.
  • Empty of personal items. Properly secured child seats and factory-installed equipment can stay. Car covers, roof cargo carriers, bike racks, spare batteries and fire extinguishers come out, and toolboxes, truck beds and storage compartments must be empty.
  • In safe working order. It has to roll, brake and steer, with no fluid leaks and no special starting procedure.
  • Aftermarket alarms turned off.
  • Any lift kit, roof rack, spoiler or other modification that changes the factory dimensions disclosed at booking. Undisclosed changes can mean extra charges or refusal at the gate.

Send us photos of your documents when you book, and we’ll flag anything that won’t pass before your car leaves the driveway.

Hawaii to California car shipping FAQ

Yes. Ocean rates leaving Hawaii run lower than rates heading to the islands. A standard car going from Oahu to California typically costs about $700 less than the same car going the other way. If you’re planning a round trip, or comparing quotes for both directions, see our page on shipping a car from California to Hawaii.

Drive the car to the terminal yourself, pick it up at the California port, and give us a flexible date range. From Oahu, that combination keeps you at the bottom of our price range. From Maui or the Big Island, flexibility matters even more, because it lets us put the car on the direct sailing instead of the monthly connection through Honolulu, which can cost close to double. Picking the car up within the lot’s free storage window keeps storage charges at zero.

No. The car has to be empty apart from properly secured child seats and factory-installed equipment. Terminals refuse cars with loose belongings, boxes or anything in the trunk, truck bed or toolboxes. Ship household items separately with your moving company.

No. Someone else can drop the car off with a notarized authorization letter and a copy of your ID, or a hauler can collect it from your address. In California, anyone you authorize in writing can collect the car with their own photo ID, or a driver can deliver it to your door. Every registered owner on the title must either be at drop-off or sign a notarized authorization.

Book three to four weeks ahead from Oahu and four to six weeks ahead from Maui, the Big Island or Kauai. Add another week or two between May and August, when military moves and summer relocations fill sailings. To ship a car from Hawaii to California on a fixed date, booking early is what secures the space. Booking early doesn’t mean dropping the car off early, though. The car still goes to the terminal within seven days of its sailing.

Yes. We plan the shipment around your report date and pack-out schedule on Oahu, Maui or the Big Island. Many PCS orders cover one vehicle through the military’s own shipping program. We handle second vehicles and anything that falls outside that entitlement. Details are on our military car shipping in Hawaii page.
